About Silverstein’s Produce
Silverstein’s Produce has been in business for over 50 years.
In 1954, when 19 year old Gino Sorge joined his brothers in Canada, he took a job delivering furniture for a Windsor store. Forty years later, the Italian-born Gino owns the fleet of trucks making deliveries for Silverstein’s Produce. Currently, Gino is still active in the company with his oldest son Tony and daughter Anna.
This all started out at Adolf Produce in the city market in 1958, Gino assumed the role of Salesman-Interpreter for the business. When Adolph’s owner died, Gino was offered the opportunity to buy the produce business, and in 1967, Gino and his wife Fiorina, become the sole owners of Adolph’s. Both Gino and Fiorina spent long hours at their new store and when their business grew, they moved to a larger space just down the street.
Tony Sorge, the eldest son of Fiorina and Gino, began helping his parents in the business when he was about seven years old. After ten years as the owner of Adolph’s, Gino bought Silverstein’s Produce which, up until that time, was owned by brothers Dave, Max, Sam and Benny Silverstein. Tony recalls that Silverstein’s was the largest produce wholesaler in the city market at the time.
Silver still supplies many restaurants, institutions, chain stores and has recently added a retail store, Silver Market Place, where consumers are able to purchase at wholesale prices. Silver Market Place is open Wednesday – Saturday.
Under Tony’s direction, Silverstein’s Produce has become one of areas largest wine, grape and juice supplier. They are also exclusive suppliers of Caterina grapes and juice.
